An often overlooked danger facing motorists is the risk of accident caused by defective or improperly maintained tires. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and United States Department of Transportations, Drivers in the United States put nearly 3 billion miles on their tires, which results in nearly 11,000 tire-related accidents on average per year.  Of these tire-related accidents, many are the result of worn or balding tires which can lead to dangerous driving conditions such as punctured or leaky tires, fires or blowouts caused by overheated tires, and even hydroplaning.   However, with regular tire tread inspection and proper inflation of automobile tires, many of these potential tire-related accidents may be avoided.  Some common ways to prevent worn or balding tires include:

  • Reading vehicle manuals to properly inflate, inspect, and maintain tires
  • Avoiding driving at excessive speeds
  • Avoiding roadway hazards
  • Avoiding potholes and other highway debris
  • Not exceeding tire weight limit capacities
  • Regular maintenance and inspection for braking and alignment issues
  • Becoming knowledgeable about any possible tire manufacturing or product defects

These simple tips may prevent you from being exposed to liability and it is important that at the first signs of possible tire balding or other defect that you seek proper repair or maintenance for affected tires.  If you or a loved one have been the victim of a tire-related accident due to the negligence of another, please contact our offices at 317-578-2100.
