With State-Wide Stay-At-Home Orders Crash Numbers Dropped Significantly

Blog

With all the bad news we have been receiving during this pandemic period, there has been some good that has come from it. The minimal amount of travel as a result of the Governor’s Stay at Home Order, fewer car accidents have been occurring since this all began in late March. In April 2019, in the 8-county area surrounding and including Indianapolis, there were a reported 4,775 crashes. This year in April 2020, that number went down to a reported total of 1,913 car accidents, which is a 60 percent decrease in crashes from last year. It is normal to see fluctuations in car accidents number from year to year, but that percentage is usually at 10 or 20 percent. With the number of car accidents down leaves room for officers to perform other duties other than traffic patrol, and on top of that, there is a significant reduction in criminal arrests.

Since the restrictions for stay-at-home orders are starting to ease up, more people are starting to travel again, which could cause the number of car accidents to begin to rise again. Drivers need to remember to keep the safety of themselves and the other drivers around them in perspective and to continue obeying the rules of the road when they are out.
