On Sunday, January 5, 2020, just after 11:00 a.m., a collision caused by a tractor trailer, involving eight other vehicles, occurred on I-65 northbound at mile marker 129.4 near the Whitestown Parkway exit. A witness told the first responders that a fire broke out after the collision when a vehicle was pinned against a guardrail by the tractor trailer in which all three of the passengers were later pronounced dead. Another vehicle that was involved in the collision was pushed over the guardrail, landing on its driver’s side and the two people inside had to later be extracted. In all, 13 people were taken to St. Vincent Hospital and one was taken to Riley Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation lasted for four hours, closing 1-65 northbound and I-865 westbound. The driver of the tractor trailer claims that he looked down to set his coffee mug down, causing him to run into slowing traffic. The driver has been charged with three counts of reckless homicide and is being held in the Boone County Jail. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the investigation into the collision could take up to six months to complete.
