Police in Hancock County say a woman allegedly drove drunk Thursday while heading back from a concert and caused a head-on crash, killing another driver. The victim was a backseat passenger in a small sedan heading westbound on State Road 234 when it was struck by another vehicle around 12:45 a.m. on the 4th of July near Troy Road, east of State Road 9. The impact of the collision trapped the other three occupants in the victim’s car and they were released once the firefighters were able to extract them. The victim was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, and the driver that caused the collision and her passenger were taken to Methodist Hospital along with by ambulance for treatment of their injuries. After she was treated, the driver that caused the collision was tested for alcohol and drugs, which tested as higher than the legal limit of 0.08, after which she was arrested and taken to Hancock County Jail on the preliminary charge of driving while intoxicated and causing a death. The collision closed the state highway for about four hours on Thursday morning. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 237 people have been killed in drunk-driving collisions since 2017 during the 4th of July Holiday season, making the 4th of July the second most dangerous holiday for drunk driving, with New Year’s Day ranked first.
