A northwest Indiana man has created an amateur radio system to provide communication between Lake County hospitals and the District 1 Homeland Security Emergency Preparedness team to be utilized in cases of emergencies where other communication sources such as telecommunications or the internet fail. The innovative system was created after the northwest Indiana man had learned of the usefulness of this technology, after becoming a licensed amateur radio operator in 1986. As amateur radio operators are known as “hams” are provided licenses to communicate over specific radio bands, the northwest Indiana man discovered that this limited use of radio band could be useful to hospitals and emergency responders if other forms of communication broke down. As a result, Lake County medical centers such as Community Hospital, St. Mary Medical Center, and Franciscan Health have all installed specialized equipment to utilize amateur radio space to communicate during emergency situations. The unique benefit of this system is to be able to provide responses between a radio operator and emergency responders or providers without background noise and disturbance in times when cell towers or the internet fail.
