On July 18, 2016, a bicyclist riding near the 2400 block on west U.S. 40 in Greenfield, Indiana, was seriously injured after being struck by a semi tractor-trailer headed eastbound on U.S. 40. The collision occurred as the 36-year-old woman while riding her bicycle along the roadway was struck by semi that hauled an oversized load. Following the collision, the 36-year-old bicyclist was transported by ambulance to an Indianapolis hospital where she was later pronounced dead as a result of the collision. Officials with both the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police arrived following the collision, and administered toxicology tests to the semi driver, with no initial indication that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol while driving. However, in spite of initial sobriety tests completed by the driver, toxicology results remain pending, and Indiana State Police investigators are currently inspecting the semi tractor-trailer to see if any safety violations existed, which may have contributed to the collision.
