LaPorte County Collision Results in 3 Deaths

Blog

On the afternoon of Friday March 17, 2017, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a news conference that three motorists were fatally injured during a collision occurring in the same day around 7:00 a.m. CST. The collision occurred when a 22-year-old Goshen woman driving a grey Pontiac was traveling on U.S. Route 20 with two 17-year-old passengers. As the Goshen woman continued on U.S. Route 20, Sheriff’s officials reported that she lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center line of traffic into the path of an oncoming semi tractor-trailer.  In spite of an attempt by the semi driver to veer into a ditch, the collision was unavoidable as the Pontiac struck head-on with his vehicle. Following the collision, investigators inferred that winter weather may have contributed to the collision as snowfall on the previous night had made surrounding roads slick on the morning of the collision.  Although collisions on U.S. Route 20 occur annually, especially along the St. Joseph Valley Parkway segment spanning across Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan, this 2-lane segment road located in rural LaPorte County has been the scene of 3 fatal collisions since January 2017 with each collision occurring within a 3-mile segment of the highway.

Although Indiana has seen some unexpectedly warm weather during the winter season, the potential for snow and other adverse weather and driving conditions may still be present. To prevent avoidable collisions and other serious injuries, take extra precautions to travel at reasonable speeds under the weather conditions and maintain your vehicle’s tires and brakes in good working order. Despite these simple measures, serious injuries as a result of avoidable collisions or other incidents occur.  If you or a loved one are injured as a result of the negligence of another, please contact the experienced legal team at Schiller Law by calling 888-578-3100 or on the web at IndyInjured.com to schedule a free consultation and case assessment.
