Indianapolis Dentist Admits to Overbilling Medicaid Fined and Forced to Pay Back $63,000

Blog

An Indianapolis dentist accepted liability for overbilling Medicaid treatments since 2013, as part of a settlement reached with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office after a licensing complaint was filed accusing the dentist of overbilling and overtreating patients.  Under the terms of the settlement, the dentist was required to pay $63,410.32 in overbilled amounts back to Medicaid, in addition to a $4,000.00 fine imposed against him by the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.  In exchange for dropping the overtreatment complaint, pending approval by the Indiana Board of Dentistry, the dentist may be required to have his patient files reviewed on a quarterly basis by another dentist to prevent further overbilling from occurring.  Although repayment of overbilled Medicaid funds will end further inquiry on the over 150 patients overbilled over the course of two years by the Indiana Attorney General, the dentist still faces three private injury suits accusing him of performing unnecessary procedures.  One Plaintiff reported that the dentist had ripped out all 15 of her bottom teeth as he claimed such treatment was necessary to prevent a heart attack or other injuries due to an infection.  In addition to private suits brought against the Indianapolis dentist, the United States Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General has also considered the dentist for review of potentially questionable billing practices.
