A Michigan City, Indiana, woman was arrested by a Porter County Sheriff’s Department Deputy following a chase in which she traveled at speeds of approximately 115 miles per hour. The chase took place on eastbound U.S. 20 near the intersection of County Road 250 East near Chesterton, as the woman continued to drive after the Deputy turned on his emergency lights and pulled into a storage business in an attempt to avoid the Deputy. After the woman pulled over after re-entering U.S. 20, the Deputy observed the woman’s 1 year-old and 2 year-old improperly restrained in car seats, in addition to discovering several capped needles in the woman’s pocket. During the initial investigation of the incident, the woman stated that she was driving at excessive speeds to get to a doctor’s appointment for her children and that she was also on the way to the pharmacy to pick up insulin after stating that she was a diabetic. However, in spite of this explanation for the woman’s excessive speeding a family member later informed law enforcement officials that the woman was not a diabetic. As a result of the initial investigation, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department arrested the woman and charged her with resisting law enforcement, neglect of a dependent, possession of a hypodermic needle and reckless driving, before reporting the incident with the Department of Child Services and giving custody of the woman’s children to a relative.
