Improper Child Restraints Likely a Factor in Head-On Collision Injuries

Blog

On May 2, 2016, a driver of a vehicle and two child passengers died as a result of a head-on collision on State Road 203 near Lexington, Indiana in Scott County.  The collision occurred as a northbound vehicle crossed into the lane of an oncoming pickup truck when approaching a curve on State Road 203.  In addition to the 3 fatal injuries sustained by passengers in the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic, three other victims sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the pickup truck and passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries. Each of the surviving children in the collision were taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, for emergency treatment.  The children who died as a result of the collision were 8 and 10 years old, and investigators at the scene observed that neither children who were in the front seat of the northbound vehicle were wearing seat belts, in addition to a back seat passenger who was in unsecured car seat who fortunately only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Although using a seat belt to drive even short distances, may seem like an inconvenience to many, when traveling with child passengers, it’s not only important that each child is properly secured; it’s the law.  In Indiana, all children under the age of 16 must be properly restrained either by using a seat belt or appropriate child restraint system, and with a growing number of improperly installed or misused child safety seats nationally, such laws have become increasingly more crucial in preventing unnecessary injuries.
