Officials of the city of Greenwood, Indiana, are calling for safety improvements along State Road 135 after three serious accidents including a fatal crash within the last ten days. The Mayor of Greenwood, Mark Myers is among those who believe safety measures need to be improved along State Road 135. The mayor believes that there can be more improvements made to the intersections along state road 135, including concerns from local police officers that there is a lack of lighting on these roads. The White River Township Fire Department Chief, Jeremy Pell, has also stated that this stretch of road is very busy and all the accidents happened when it was dark and in areas where there are no traffic signals. Chief Pell says that these fatal crashes have changed his and his families daily commute, as they live in the Buckmoor Manor Subdivisions, and because of the risk created by this stretch of road, he and his family do not turn left on that road. Both the White River Fire Chief and the Mayor of Greenwood both agree the repaid growth and development in recent years have brought significant increases to State Road 135 between Curry Road and Stones Crossing Road, and the traffic safety features already on this stretch of the road need to be upgraded.

One of the most recent collisions occurred on Monday February 19th, 2018 at 6:30 a.m. north of where Olive Branch Road intersects with State Road 135. The police say a 27-year old woman was crossing this intersection on foot when she was hit by a vehicle. She had sustained serious head injuries before being rushed to IU Health Methodist Hospital. On the morning of Friday, February 16, 2018, two vehicles were involved in a collision which took the life of 17-year old Center Grove High School student, this accident occurred at the entrance to the Buckmoor Manor Subdivision on State Road 135. On February 9th, 2018, yet another pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by car at State Road 135 and Honey Ln. Each of these accidents happened within roughly 500 feet of each of each other in the city of Greenwood.

However, because State Road 135 is a state highway, any improvements to the traffic signals or patterns would have to be approved by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Mayor Myers has been in communication with INDOT officials about studying the safety of State Road 135 from County Line Road through the Greenwood area and has stated that additional traffic signals could be included in future improvements but would have to be carefully placed. Other safety upgrades would include limiting left turns to and from State Road 135, raised medians, and additional lighting along the highway. Currently, the Indiana Department of Transportation has been studying the safety of State Road 135, starting at the County Line Road, although there is no timeframe for when that study will specifically focus on the areas between Curry Road and Stones Crossing Road.
